Gary Harrell - Black Love

The artist spent 45 years in prison. During these arduous decades he was not able to express his physical self to the love of his life. He found refuge in this intimate work and gathered pieces from magazines, carefully cut them out and placed them in a composition to feel the freedom and love that he was denied. In this work a heroic black woman stands as a goddess on the foam of the sea in a surrealistic backdrop. The all seeing eye stands overhead and abstract statues flank her left and right.

Been Free: Incarcerated Artists NFT Project is created in partnership with Hillman Grad’s co-founders, Lena Waithe and Rishi Rajani, and Huma House, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles that supports the needs of currently incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through art and creativity. Been Free elevates the work of four artists, Kenneth Webb, Gary Harrell, Asia Johnson, and Kush each who have experienced incarceration and have embraced the power of art to tell their unique stories.
